Illness or Pain Just by Looking at Them?

Often when we meet someone who says they have a debilitating  illness or injury, we question how that can be possible when to us they “look” fine! Surprisingly, more than 125 Million Americans live with at least 1 chronic condition. What’s more, over 40 Million are  limited in their daily activities by their illness; yet, only 7 million use a cane, walker, wheelchair or crutches all or most of the time.

     We often do not realize there are people who live with what we call, Invisible Disabilities. This term describes symptoms which are not always obvious to the onlooker. Whether or not the person also has a “visible” impairment, anyone who is debilitated daily by extreme fatigue, dizziness, pain, weakness, cognitive dysfunctions and more has an "invisible" disability. These symptoms can occur due to chronic illness, chronic pain, injury, birth disorders, etc.

     When a person becomes ill or is injured, they usually begin a journey towards recovery. But what happens when the pain and limitations continue? Often friends and family begin to question if their loved one is just being lazy or seeking attention. After all, they “look good!”
