Clay Aiken in Celebrity Apprentice Finals for Kids with Disabilities

UPDATE – Clay Aiken makes it into the Finals of Celebrity Apprentice. See below for details!

Clay Aiken, first runner up on ‘American Idol’ Season 2 in 2003 is now a contestant on ‘Celebrity Apprentice,’ Season 5. He is there to raise money for his charity, the National Inclusion Project.

Clay shared:

The National Inclusion Project is an organization that I helped start about eight years ago. I used to see kids with disabilities get kicked out of programs or not be allowed to go to a summer camp that I was working at because they had Autism or a little boy or girl had Cerebral Palsy and they didn’t have the ability to work with them at the summer camp. In our social settings. We do segregate. We don’t include individuals with disabilities in workplaces oftentimes and almost always,  unfortunately, in extra-curricular programs. So we work with university to help create a curriculum that teaches people how to include kids with disabilities and without disabilities in service learning projects. So, inclusive groups of kids, teenagers, will work together to do stuff in their community. We are sort of a service organization that serves other non-profits in a way (Video: Clay Aiken’s Charity).

For his first task as Project Manager ,the show that aired on March 25th, the teams were asked to throw a party for Crystal Light’s new “mocktail” beverages. For the men’s team, Unanimous, Clay volunteered to be Project Manager. For the women’s team, Forte, Aubrey O’Day was the Project Manager.

Clay and his team chose to highlight the Peach Bellini flavor and use the tagline, “Life’s a Peach.” Their party had a beach-theme, complete with sand, island music and tikki-bars. Special guests, Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb showed up to the party and when the Crystal Light Executives arrived, Clay sang, “Under the Boardwalk.”

Although the contest seemed to be close, Team Unanimous was chosen as the winners. As their reward, Clay’s charity was to be given $20,000 from the show. As an added bonus, Crystal Light also contributed $30,000, making Clay’s contribution to his charity, $50,000.

Other celebrities who have participated in Season 5: Adam CarollaArsenio Hall, Aubrey O’Day, Cheryl Tiegs, Clay Aiken, Dayana Mendoza, Debbie Gibson, Dee Snider, George Takei, Lisa Lampanelli, Lou Ferrigno, Michael Andretti, Patricia Velasquez, Paul Teutul, Sr., Penn Jillette, Teresa Giudice, Tia Carrere, Victoria Gotti.

UPDATE 5/13/12 – Clay Aiken makes it into the Finals of Celebrity Apprentice. Aubrey O’Day is fired, leaving Clay Aiken and Arsenio Hall to battle it out in the finals. Clay and Arsenio are giving their tasks to raise money for their charities by planning, producing and starring in a fundraising event. They were given the opportunity to choose from a group of former Celebrity Apprentice contestants.

Clay’s Team: Aubrey O’DayDebbie Gibson, Dee Snider and Penn Jillette.

DJ with Invisible Disability Educates Community About IDA

Several weeks ago, the Invisible Disabilities Association (IDA) was contacted by a young lady, Laurie Cohen, who is a DJ for a college radio station. She wanted to do a PSA (Public Service Announcement) to spread more awareness about debilitating illness and pain and the outreach of IDA.

After connecting with Laurie, we knew we wanted to tell her story. Laurie, 31, has neuropathy in her pelvis. She has been suffering from this permanent condition for 3 years, after she was rear ended in a car accident. She has severe neuropathic pain as well as loss of sensation in her pelvis. The severe pelvic pain prevents her from being able to sit.

Laurie said, “I have a ‘sitting disability;’ I can only lay down or stand up. This disability effects every aspect of my life.”

Here are just a few examples: Laurie has to stand up to get her hair cut, she lays down or stands up to eat meals, she stands up at the movie theater (she recently stood for two hours to see the new Harry Potter film).

Laurie shared. “It is a very tiresome disability and the worst part is that I ‘look’ completely normal so people either don’t understand or think I’m lying when I explain my disability.”

Last spring (2011), Laurie became a community volunteer for her local college radio station, KSCU Santa Clara 103.3 FM – The Underground Sound. According to Laurie, this is one of the only college radio stations that accepts DJ’s who are not students. She does a 1 hour radio show Friday evenings, which she considers a very enjoyable hobby.

Laurie commented, “My other chronic condition is major depression, so as you can imagine being a DJ is quite helpful!”

Laurie’s show is called, Fairyland and she goes by the name, “DJ Fairy.” It is a specialty radio show where she plays 1960′s “flower power” music, which she describes as “Mostly lesser known / obscure artists.” It seems that the college students and her community are thoroughly enjoying her program, because Laurie noted, “I have been getting great feedback about my radio show!”

It sounds like Laurie has really found a wonderful outlet to express her talents and music, as well as finding joy in the journey! Thank you, Laurie for spreading awareness about others living with invisible disabilities!

Secret Millionaire, Marc Paskin, Gives to Woman with Invisible Disability

This is Not a Story About Money, but of a Man Who Learned That Giving Time and Love is Priceless.

ABC TV’s hit show, the Secret Millionaire sends millionaires out to experience a life on

a very small budget and with the goal of finding amazing organizations doing incredible work in their community.

On the show that aired March 13, 2011, San Diego millionaire Marc Paskin embarked on an adventure that taught him some valuable lessons he will never forget.

“Marc Paskin came from a poor family and worked his way through college. He used his life savings of a thousand bucks for a down payment on a duplex. That was the start of a career in buying and selling real estate that turned him into a multi-millionaire” (ABC Secret Millionaire). Paskin is now a Real Estate Investor at The Paskin Group. He and his wife, Marsha were married for 28 years until she tragically passed away due to diabetes.

Paskin was sent to Detroit, Michigan for 6 days, with no credit cards and only $40 cash for groceries. Set out to meet people making a difference in the lives of others, Paskin met and volunteered with three different organizations.

First, he met Beverly at Young Detroit Builders, who focus on youth who have lived a challenging life and train them to manage their finances and how to do various construction jobs. YDB rehabilitates or builds new homes for low income families and people with disabilities. In the past 17  years, they have rebuilt 800 homes. At the end of the show, Paskin presented YDB with a check for $40,000.

Another group Paskin discovered was The Man Network, which uses volunteers from the neighborhood to patrol by car and foot. Their presence helps keep the neighborhood safer.  At the end of the show, Paskin presented them with a check for $10,000.

Seemingly Paskin’s most touching experience was through meeting John from Really Living. This organization gives uninsured patients free transportation to medical appointments and some household help. So, Paskin signed up and picked up Matt for his dialysis.

During this appointment, Paskin met Courtney, a 24 year old mom on dialysis. Courtney had a kidney transplant four years prior, which went into failure three years before the show. Marc asked how he could help Courtney who shared she needed help with moving some things in her house to the storage. She said, ”Anything you do would be wonderful for me.”

Many living with debilitating conditions value a bit of time someone can spend with them to give a little help around the house or just be there as a friend. Loved ones often think it takes a ton of time or effort, but it is the little things that can bring joy to those whose battle illness and pain. Paskin commented, “I was not only helping her with chores around the house, but spending some time letting her know people care about her … care about her daughter.”

While  spending time with Courtney, she shared about her 4 year old  daughter, London, who was born at  27 weeks weighing only 1 lb 10  oz  and had an emergency colostomy.  London was in the hospital 2 months  then Courtney’s transplant  failed.  Paskin commented, “I just feel bad  about what she has to go through in  life.”

At the end of the show, Paskin gave John at Really Living $40,000. In addition, he surprised everyone when he gave the last check to Courtney and her daughter in the amount of $20,000. Paskin said, “I see what she’s going through and she breaks my heart and i wanted to do something nice for her.”

To wrap up the show, Paskin shared a few things he discovered while on this mission. He said:

“I’ve always thought it’s good to do good things for people, but maybe I didn’t quite realize how much they appreciate it and how important it is. So I’ve learned a lot.” Paskin added, “Not everybody has money they can give away, but everybody can give some of their time and some of their love to people and it would be a better world if everybody would do that.”

These are words that we can take to heart, as we think about our friend or family member or neighbor living with a debilitating condition. We can all make a difference!

May is Big Awareness Month for Many Health Conditions

Every month of the year, there is a list of nationally recognized causes, illnesses and even fun and silly topics. The awareness spans from Teacher Appreciation and Cancer to Oatmeal and Spunky Old Broads Month.

Although every month brings awareness to very important diseases, illnesses and disorders, May seems to be loaded with them.

We found several lists, but none seemed complete. So, we did our best to add as many as we could find. If you know of any other National or State Awareness Months to be added to this list, please leave a comment on this page, along with a link to a diagnosis specific health organization or foundation’s press release or notice that we can confirm with. Also, please feel free to leave a post about any Awareness Days or Weeks! We would love to hear about them all!

May Awareness Months for Health Conditions:

This is not a list of all illnesses, diseases and disorders that may cause debilitating symptoms. This is a list of conditions that have Federal or State status for Awareness Months or Weeks. As you may know, the Invisible Disabilities Association reaches around the world to all living with illness, pain, injury and disabilities … there are thousands! If you would like to bring more awareness to a health condition you or your loved one lives with, find out what month it falls under and contact an organization that focuses on that specific condition (ie: Arthritis Foundation) to obtain press releases, posters, flyers and more. Together, we can get the word out and educate the world!

Actress Marlee Matlin Raises a Million Dollars for the Starkey Hearing Foundation

Actress Marlee Matlin joined Donald Trump’s hit TV reality show, “Celebrity Apprentice.” On the episode that aired April 3rd, Marlee took on the role of Project Manager for her all female team, Team A.S.A.P. The challenge was to create custom handmade pieces of art to sell in a gallery.

Project Manager, John Rich, along with the men of Team Backbone, raised a very impressive amount of over $600,000. The women’s team raised just $14,000 short of one million dollars! Trump tossed a donation of $14,000 so that the donation to Matlin’s charity, the Starkey Hearing Foundation, would total one million dollars.

Another challenge the celebrities faced was to each design a hat that was to be sold at the gallery. The hats were judged and the winner, La Toya Jackson, received $25,000 to give to her charity, AIDS Project L.A. Jackson’s hat was of a depiction of her brother Michael Jackson’s glove. Jackson also gave her personal shirt which was a gift from her brother Michael and one of only two like it, to their cause, which in turn sold for ninety nine thousand dollars.

Although Team A.S.A.P. won the challenge, Trump allowed the money that Team Backbone raised to go to their project manager, John Rich‘s charity, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Nevertheless, someone on the team was to be fired and it was Richard Hatch.

Matlin became deaf at 18 months old. At 21 years old, Matlin was the youngest recipient of the Best Actress Oscar for her starring role in the movie, “Children of a Lesser God.” She has also been nominated twice for both a Golden Globe and a People’s Choice Award, as well as two nominations for her guest appearances on “Seinfeld” and “Picket Fences.” Matlin is the author of several books as well.

The Starkey Hearing Foundation has helped hundreds of thousands hear better. “The donation received from ‘The Celebrity Apprentice‘ will be utilized to fund Starkey hearing missions throughout 2011 in order to provide more adults and children in need with free hearing devices. Currently there are Starkey Hearing missions planned for this spring in Colombia, Haiti, Mexico, Israel and New York City. According to the Starkey Hearing Foundation, the $1,000,000 will provide much needed funding for the Foundation to get closer to its goal of one million free hearing aids in this decade” (Starkey Press Release).

Matlin was joined on the show by fellow A.S.A.P team members: Hope Dworaczyk, La Toya Jackson, Star Jones and NeNe Leakes. Team Backbone was comprised of Project Manager, John Rich with Richard Hatch, Lil Jon, Meat Loaf, Mark McGrath and Gary Busey. Backbone team member, Jose Canseco had to leave the show before the challenge, because his father’s illness had taken a turn for the worse. Trump gave Canseco $25,000 for his charity, B.A.T. (Baseball Assistance Team) which primarily provides financial assistance for medical coverage to baseball players and their families in need.

Actor Gary Busey Wins 40K for Brain Injury Center

Actor Gary Busey joined Donald Trump’s hit TV reality show, “Celebrity Apprentice,” this season. On the episode that aired March 21st, Busey took on the role of project manager for his all male team, Team Backbone. The challenge was to create a display ”camping experience”  for Camping World.

Although there were several hurdles the team experienced, Busey’s team won the challenge. The prize was a $20,000 donation and $20,000 in goods from Camping World to his chosen charity, The Center for Head Injury Services in St. Louis, MO.

Busey began his movie and television acting career in the 1970′s. He was nominated for his role in the movie “The Buddy Holly Story,” as the Big Bopper in 1978.

In 1988, Busey had a serious motorcycle accident in which he sustained a fractured skull and permanent brain injury. That is why Busey chose a charity that helps those living with brain damage due to head injuries. Watch video interview with Busey as he elaborates about his choice.  The Center for Head Injury Services wrote:

“Life after a head injury is never the same. Survivors of traumatic brain injury are usually left with life long cognitive and physical impairments. They find themselves separated from the world.”

Busey is notorious for his impulsivity and unusual personality. On the show, fellow team members often complain that he is unable to “focus.” However, what people often do not understand is that with traumatic brain injuries:

“Depending on the part of the brain affected and the severity of the injury, the result on any one individual can vary greatly. Personality changes, memory and judgement deficits, lack of impulse control, and poor concentration are all common. Behavioral changes can be stressful for families and caregivers who must learn to adapt their communication techniques, established relationships, and expectations of what the impaired person can or cannot do” (Family Caregiver Alliance).

Busey was joined on the show by his team members: Jose Canseco, David Cassidy, Richard Hatch, Lil Jon, Meat Loaf, Mark McGrath and John Rich. On the opposing side, Team ASAP included: Hope Dworaczyk, La Toya Jackson, Star Jones, NeNe Leakes, Marlee Matlin, Lisa Rinna, Niki Taylor and Dionne Warwick. Several contestants have since been sent home by Trump, with his infamous statement … “You’re fired!”

Living with Asperger’s and Tourette’s: James Durbin Contestant on ‘American Idol’

James Durbin Latest News, Videos and Updates Below!

21-year-old James Durbin of Santa Cruz, CA auditioned for American Idol in San Fransisco, which aired on February 9, 2011.

James’ back-story told of his long, life journey of struggles. James’ father was a bass player and spent much of his time out on the road, playing in bands. When James was only nine, he lost his father to a drug overdose. James teared up when he said, “It hurt to lose him, cuz I didn’t get a chance to know him.”

After his father’s death, James was on medication for a sleep disorder and stress. He went to Stanford Medical Center, where he was diagnosed with Tourette’s and Asperger’s Syndrome (a high functioning form of Autism). James continued, “As I was getting older, at school people would tell me, ’Cut that out!’ ‘Stop that!’ – I can’t!” … “I always got made fun of, beat up. I was just LOST.”

Then James lit up when he began to talk about his fiance, Heidi. James smiled and said, “In the middle of it all, I met an angel.” … “Heidi’s just changed my life SO much!”

James and Heidi have a beautiful son, Hunter, and had been struggling to get by each day.  He had recently been laid off from his job, before the auditions. The American Idol opportunity is more than just a dream for James and his new family.

At first, James seemed concerned about the Tourette’s, getting in front of the judges and letting his nerves take over. After he finished his song, Jennifer Lopez remarked, “You go away when you sing.” James replied, “I do. When I was younger, I was diagnosed with Tourette’s. When I sing, it just all goes away, like I don’t have a care in the world.”

Randy Jackson jumped in to say, “I like your voice. I like your range.” Steven Tyler added, “Wow, that was OVER the top!” All of the judges were happy to give James a “golden ticket” to Hollywood!

Since then, James has continued to soar through Hollywood week to the Top 13 and beyond! See all the latest updates, videos and more resources below! What’s more James has already become an idol for those living with Tourette’s and Asperger’s. He has brought awareness and hope to children, adults, parents and loved ones around the world!

WHAT IS JAMES UP TO NOW?

Snapshot of James at WWE Video by fitperez.com

UPDATE 4/6/12: James released his album, Memories of a Beautiful Disaster, on November 2011. He and his longtime girlfriend and mother of their child, Hunter, were married on New Years Eve 2012. The ceremony was on the edge of a California redwood forest and Hunter was the ring bearer. Fellow ‘American Idol’ contestants from Season 10 Casey Abrams, Haley Reinhart and Stefano Langone also attended.

James is not only enjoying a career doing what he loves, but he continues to bring about awareness and support of Tourette’s and Asperger’s. James encourages those living with these conditions to keep dreaming and keep pursuing their goals, despite their challenges. James shares his own personal struggles with being teased as a child and how others can believe in themselves. As a result, James brings a message of anti-bullying.

At a WWE rally in March of 2012, James was asked to sing impromptu and he was amazing (James Durbin Official Site). When speaking to hundreds of Miami-Dade sixth graders:

“James  shared his emotional personal story of being bullied while in school — and how, after he took action and reported the bullying to school officials, the bully would come back months later… to apologize” (mjsbigblog).

In light of James’ fight against bullying and mistreatment of kids by other kids, James is asking all of his fans and those who stand behind his message to help him “trend” the hash-tag, #outcastarmy on Twitter.

Thank you, James, for continuing to give hope and inspiration to children, adults, parents and teachers! You have a passion and a gift that is being used to make this world a better place!

Living with TBI: ‘American Idol’ Contestant, Chris Medina, Stands by Fiance

26-year-old Chris Medina auditioned for American Idol in Milwaukee, which aired on Wednesday January, 26, 2011. Before Chris sang, he moved the judges and America to tears with his story. (Photo of Chris Medina and Juliana Ramos before the accident – from their Facebook page).

Two years ago Chris proposed to Juliana Ramos, his girlfriend of eight years. Just two months before the wedding, Juliana was in a serious car accident that left her in a coma.

The doctors told the family she had suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI), several fractures to her face and they did not think she would wake.

“Her chances of surviving through the night were in doubt and it was much too soon to speculate about her prospects for a full recovery” posted the Laurus Foundation, an organization assisting in raising funds for Juliana’s medical bills.

Miraculously, Juliana came out of the coma and was reunited with Chris, her family and her friends. Chris has continued to stand by her side to help care for Juliana. During Chris’ American Idol audition promotional package, Chris said:

“I was about to make vows just two months from the accident. Through thick and thin … till death do us part … in sickness and in health … for better or for worse.” He continued, “What kind of guy would I be if I walked out when she needed me the most?”

Chris then continued with his audition with a very emotional and heartfelt song, “Breakeven” that seemed to express Chris’ journey during this very difficult time with the love of his life.

The judges were so taken by his story, that they asked him to go get Juliana, then quickly ran up to greet her when she entered the room. Steven Tyler bent over, gave her a kiss and affectionately told her Chris sings so good “because he sings to you.” After the judges introduced themselves, they exclaimed that Chris was “going to Hollywood!” and the entire family rejoiced!

Our hats are off to this young man who refuses to walk away from his fiance who is now living with TBI. Sadly, many spouses often leave the marriage when debilitating illness or injury enters their lives. Since they hadn’t married yet, Chris could have easily chosen to step out.

Chris and Juliana have a very long road ahead, as they face continued rehabilitation, extensive therapies and surgeries. It won’t be easy, but they have the support of friends and family – something everyone living with a disabling condition needs.

Chris’ audition above.

2/17/11 UPDATE: Chris  moved on to the final round in Hollywood which will determine if he will be in the top 24.

Woman with Cryoglobulinemia and Her Service Dog Bring Hope to Others

A Thanksgiving Story.

Dr. Diane Dike lives with Cryoglobulinemia, a rare blood disorder that can be very painful, debilitating and life threatening. Seven years ago, when Diane’s condition was greatly worsening, she was told about a doggie that had been in an accident and needed a new home.

Diane and her husband, Paul, went to see this pup with two broken legs and a ripped off tail - it was love at first sight! At the time, they had no idea that this little creature they named Gracie would not only fill their lives with joy, but would also give back in bigger ways they could ever imagine.

It didn’t take long for Gracie to come to life and realize an even greater purpose! Gracie began alerting Diane before she would have an attack, by aggressively licking Diane. The forewarning has allowed Diane to take precautions to help prevent the Cryoglobulinemia from “pooling” the blood in her legs and feet, by raising them. Keeping Diane’s blood warm is also imperative, so Gracie cuddles in Diane’s lap with a nice comfy blanket to warm up her extremities. Diane has also taught Gracie how to retrieve things for her, like her cell phone or keys. After the honing in of Gracie’s natural talents, along with some training for proper behavior in public, Gracie became a full-fledged Service Dog.

With Gracie’s help, once a very athletic and career oriented woman, Diane also found her new purpose amidst her limitations. She became the Founder and President of Second Chance with Saving Grace that reaches out to others in need through hospitals, churches, prisons, orphanages and other groups. Diane was also the recipient of the Invisible Disabilities Association’s Inspiration Award in 2008.

paul-diane-and-gracie-dike-smPaul and Diane share an encouraging message about love, giving and how they rescued Gracie, then “Gracie rescued Diane right back!” (PRLog). Their story comes alive in a beautifully illustrated story series book called, The Adventures of Gracie & Diane. Diane has also written an autobiography, God Made Only One of Me.

The trio has enjoyed their lives together as a family, eager to love with the motto “no human or animal left behind.” With Gracie always by her side, Diane’s indelible spirit has uplifted children and adults alike. So many who are living with chronic illness, cancer, history of abuse and more can relate and be encouraged that even with their brokenness, they are loveable, unique and can make a difference in someone else’s life.

“With Dike’s precarious health it would be best for her to stay home, safe in bed limiting the variables that can take her life and limbs. But she’s not going to let what she can’t do keep her from doing what she CAN! Even though she pays a high price for living and giving, she is committed to both. She is strong and courageous inspiring all around her to be the same” (PRLog).

The Dike family has been planning a trip across the country in their recently donated RV, to share their story and hope to many. Sadly, the week before they were to leave, Gracie was diagnosed with Mast Cell Cancer. She had surgery to remove a spot on her ear and tests to see how advanced was. As the doctor was giving the couple the bad news, Diane’s tears began to fall “Yet, Gracie ever on duty, caught each one with a kiss” (PRLog).

Paul and Diane had to wait for the final test results to arrive, before they could leave on their journey. If the tests showed she was in stage one, they would have the green light to continue on their way. If it were stage two, she would need treatment and with stage three the doctor said, “let’s not think about that right now” (PRlog).

The following week, Paul and Diane received the incredible news! Diane exclaimed, “Gracie had stage one Mast Cell cancer but the wonderful Dr. Charlie said they got it all, good job & have a GREAT trip!!!!” (IDA communications).

So, the three will enjoy their Thanksgiving Blessing, with plenty to be grateful for this year and a new lease on their passion to never take anything for granted. They will be leaving soon for their American Missionary Journey going west through Utah then down through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. To schedule Diane, Paul and Gracie for your church or group, call 303-225-2717 or visit their website.

Thane’s Battle with Lyme Disease

Thane Fredrickson has been battling Lyme Disease since he was a very young child. Although for most of his life they did not know what was causing his health problems, he continued to struggle with such conditions as frequent illness, joint pain, digestive disturbances, brain fog, confusion, difficulty concentrating and memory.

“I just did my best to get through the days and sleepless nights as the years passed” Thane said.

By the time Thane was in his late teens, he was totally disabled by the Lyme and bed bound by 20. He did not get diagnosed and treated for Lyme Disease until several years later. Though he has experienced some improvements in the past 2.5 years, he is still very ill at the age of 27.

“Lyme has stolen everything from me. My health for one! In addition I have found close relationships difficult to make and maintain. I have trouble doing anything that requires any sort of focus so I haven’t been able to develop many of the skills and talents I would have hoped to by this age. Worst of all it has destroyed my sense of self. My identity. I honestly dont know who I am without this illness because i’ve never met that person” Thane expressed.

With all Thane has been through, he strives to be thankful for the little things in life. Thane explained:

“If this disease has given me anything it has been a deep appreciation for the small things I do have in life. It has forced me to prioritize and determine exactly what is important to me. It has given me a lot of time to think.”

Thane has not given up. He continues to research and try new treatments. Like many living with invisible disabilities, he wants to be able to do the things that most people take for granted. So, Thane shares his experiences with others with Lyme Disease and reaches out in hopes of helping one another with support and knowledge.
